Every Malaysian has probably heard of and eaten a bowl of Penang asam laksa from their favorite stall, but how about one that’s being sold via express kiosks?

Pak’ Mund Laksa is the brainchild of Mr Edmund Ong, an entrepreneur who possesses 20 years of experience in the food and beverage (F&B), trading and retail industry along with a fervent desire to share the unique and delectable Penang asam laksa to every corner of the world.


The company was founded in March 2021 and Pak’ Mund Laksa 1st Licensing Model Store started in Nov 2021 in East Malaysia, where Penang asam laksa is extremely hard to find. They are also the first ever brand to bring express kiosks selling the dish to the Bornean states of Sabah and Sarawak.

 

About the Founder

Hi! My name is Edmund Ong and I’m the founder and managing director of Pak’ Mund Laksa, the first and only Penang Asam Laksa express kiosk to be established in East Malaysia.


For those who may not know what asam laksa is, it is an iconic dish that mainly consists of ikan kembung (mackerel/ sardine), tamarind, shrimp paste, chilies, onions, and rice noodles – making for a very spicy and aromatic dish.

In fact, Penang asam laksa has been rated #7 in CNN’s list of the World’s Best Foods in 2020, further putting this humble dish into the international limelight. 


But if you’re wondering why I chose Penang asam laksa out of all other Malaysian food, let me take you back in time and explain how it all came about.

 

The Story of Pak' Mund Laksa
As one who travels extensively for work, I often set foot in East Malaysia, specifically Sabah, for up to several months. During my time there, I began craving for Penang asam laksa and nasi lemak – dishes which are readily available at the peninsula but incredibly hard to find in East Malaysia.

As I mulled over this, I suddenly thought to myself: “Why not bring this well-loved and internationally acclaimed delicacy to over here so that the people can enjoy it without flying to Penang or KL?”


With this idea in mind, I grew excited by the minute and started to form a plan in establishing a brand that exclusively sells asam laksa to all Malaysians regardless of their location.


However, as it is with most, if not all businesses, I was met with some obstacles in my quest to bring Penang asam laksa to East Malaysia.

It all began on March 18, 2020, when Malaysia was gripped by the Covid-19 pandemic and everyone was forced to temporarily abandon their business ventures in order to prevent the spread of the virus and I was of no exception.


After more than a year later, restrictions began to ease and I was finally able to continue my journey and established the first east Malaysian outlet in May 2021. At that time, it seemed that Pak’ Mund Laksa was well on its way to overwhelming success.


Unfortunately, the business faced another roadblock in the form of MCO 3.0, where it lasted for the entire month of June and severely disrupted operations, resulting in a revenue figure of only RM202,000. During this challenging period, I had to learn to be resourceful and turned to online platforms to weather the storm.

Thankfully, the business was able to survive the economic turmoil and gradually began to rake in revenue, where it grew to a total amount of RM386,000 as of May 2022 – a 89% increase!


Fast forward to today, Pak’ Mund Laksa has established 10 outlets across East Malaysia, including the very first licensee outlet which was launched in November 2021. We have also won the Best Brand Popularity Award  for our efforts in producing Penang asam laksa for every Malaysian to enjoy.

However, my plans to share the delicious Penang asam laksa is not limited to Malaysia alone, but also to other countries abroad such as China, Thailand, Brunei, and Indonesia.


Why these countries, you ask? The reason why I decided to expand Pak’ Mund Laksa’s at these locations is that they share the same love for spicy food just like we Malaysians do.


Also, I firmly believe that Penang asam laksa is a dish that not only embodies the five key tastes of Chinese cooking (sweet, salty, spicy, sour, bitter), but is also one that fully displays the multicultural spirit that Malaysians are very proud of.

 

Potential to Develop
To fulfil the company’s mission of “sharing the iconic Penang asam laksa with everyone at every corner of Southeast Asia”, Pak’ Mund Laksa has outlined its 5-year plan which will not only do just that, but also elevate asam laksa’s status as being one of the best foods in the world at the international level.


In 2023, Pak’ Mund Laksa aims to obtain Mesti and Halal certification as this will not only ease our operations in Malaysia, but also our future entry and expansion in countries like Brunei and Indonesia where a majority of its population are Muslims.


In 2024, Pak’ Mund Laksa looks to move from being a supplier of asam laksa to being a manufacturer of its own brand of grocery products which will then be sold throughout Malaysia and exported overseas. Pak’ Mund Laksa also plans to work alongside other manufacturers in producing our very own range of sauces, instant noodles, snacks and many more.

Although the pandemic is currently at an endemic phase, many are still hesitant to go out and buy products for themselves. As such, Pak’ Mund Laksa will be forming a delivery team complete with its own transportation system. This will not only help reduce high transportation costs for licensees and customers, but also generate extra income for the delivery team. 


For 2025, Pak’ Mund Laksa will be creating a platform that comes with a complete operating system, where every order status can be traced by the licensee/customer from time to time and ensure that it is delivered right to their doorstep safe and sound. 


Last but not least, Pak’ Mund Laksa looks to establish 150 stores across Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and China in 2026. On top of that, we also wish to issue master licenses and establish joint ventures with willing business partners overseas.

Pak’ Mund Laksa is helmed by Mr Edmund Ong, an individual who has a deep passion in sharing his love for Penang asam laksa to every corner of Malaysia and eventually the world. He has 20 years of experience in working in the food and beverage (F&B), trading, and retailing industry.


Assisting alongside him is Ms Emily Bong, who has more than 17 years of experience in handling financial, accounting, human resources, and secretarial duties in the food and beverage (F&B), trading and forestry industry to make sure that Pak’ Mund runs like a well-oiled machine.

 

Funding Goals, Utilisation & Time Frame
For this crowdfunding, Pak’ Mund Laksa is planning to incorporate a minimum of RM500,000 and a maximum of RM1 million. 40% of the funds will be used for business expansion (both locally and abroad) for a period of 12 months, 20% for sales and marketing promotion for a period of 12-18 months, 20% for plant and equipment upgrades for a period of 12 months, 10% for hardware and software system upgrades for a period of 12 months, and the remaining 10% to upscale manpower for a period of 12 months.

关于创办人

您好,我是Edmund Ong,东马唯一首家槟城亚叁叻沙速售亭Pak’ MundLaksa的创始人兼董事总经理。


或许有人没听说过亚叁叻沙,它是一道又香又辣的面食,由鲭鱼、罗望子、虾酱、辣椒、洋葱和米线组成。

事实上,槟城亚叁叻沙曾被CNN列为2020年世界最佳美食榜单的第七位,进一步将这道朴素的面食设置在国际聚光灯下。


然而,若您问我为何在众多马来西亚美食中选择了槟城亚叁叻沙,且听我娓娓道来。
 

 

Pak' Mund Laksa的故事
基于工作原因,以前我经常到东马,特别是沙巴出差,每次都会待上几个月。在那里,一些在西马半岛很常见但在东马极为罕见的美食,如槟城亚叁叻沙和椰浆饭等,总是让我心心念念。

有一次再度陷入念想时,我一时兴起:“为何不把这道备受喜爱及受到国际认可的美食带到这里,让 人们不用为了尝到它而特意飞到槟城或吉隆坡呢?”


有了这个想法后,我兴奋地开始积极投入制定计划,以建立一个专门向不论身在何处的全马人民销售亚叁叻沙的品牌。


然而,正如大部分的企业之初,我将槟城亚叁叻沙带到东马的过程障碍重重。

一切始于2020年3月18日,当时马来西亚受到新冠肺炎疫情的影响,每个人都被迫暂时暂停自己的业务,以防止病毒传播,我也不例外。


一年多后,限制开始放松,我终于能够继续我的旅程,并于2021年5月建立了在东马的第一家分店。当时,Pak’ Mund Laksa的一切看似顺风顺水。


只可惜好景不长,我们的业务接着迎来了另一个障碍,即贯穿整个2021年6月份MCO 3.0,严重干扰了运营,导致我们的收入仅为202,000令吉。在这个充满挑战的时期,我必须学会足智多谋,并求助于在线平台来度过这场风暴。

谢天谢地,我们得以在经济动荡中生存下来,并逐渐开始大幅增加收入,截至2022年5月,我们的总收入增长了89%,高达386,000令吉!


时至今日,Pak’ Mund Laksa成功在东马开设了10家分店,其中包括2021年11月的第一家营业执照持有门店。我们也还凭借将槟城亚叁叻沙推广给每一位马来西亚人的努力荣获最佳品牌人气奖。

然而,我的槟城亚叁叻沙分享计划并不止步于马来西亚,还包括中国、泰国、文莱和印度尼西亚等国家。


你也许会好奇为什么是这些国家,那是因为这些国家的人和马来西亚人一样喜爱辛辣的食物。


此外,我坚信槟城亚叁叻沙这道面食不仅能体现华人烹饪中最关键的酸、甜、苦、辣、咸,也充分展现了马来西亚人引以为傲的多元文化融合的精神。

 

发展潜能
为了完成“将标志性美食槟城亚叁叻沙分享给东南亚各个角落的每个人”的使命,Pak’ Mund Laksa安排了5年周详的计划,以期在达到使命的同时,将亚叁叻沙的地位升级成世界级的美食之一。



Pak’ Mund Laksa 计划在2023年内获得MESTI和清真认证,因为这不仅会使我们在马来西亚的运营更为便利,同时也将方便我们未来在文莱和印度尼西亚等穆斯林人口占多数的国家进行扩张。


Pak’ Mund Laksa展望在2024年从亚叁叻沙的供应商变成出售食品杂货的制造商,并将产品销售至全马各地及出口到国外。Pak’ Mund Laksa还计划与其他制造商合作,生产属于自己的酱汁、方便面、零食等产品。

尽管疫情已经进入大流行阶段,很多人依然对出门购物存在一定的顾虑。因此, Pak’ Mund Laksa将组建具有完善交通系统的运输团队。这不仅有助于降低营业执照持有人和其他客户的运输成本,还将为运输团队带来额外收入。


在2025年,Pak’ Mund Laksa将创建一个拥有完备操作系统的平台。营业执照持有者及其他顾客可在该平台内实时追踪每则订单的状态,以确保订单安全可靠地被送往目的地。


最后,Pak’ Mund Laksa即将在2026年于年在马来西亚、文莱、泰国、印度尼西亚、新加坡和中国开设150家分店,发放国外主营业务许可,并与有合作意愿的海外伙伴共同建立合资企业。

Pak’ Mund Laksa的掌舵人Mr Edmund Ong对于将槟城亚叁叻沙发扬至马来西亚甚至世界的各个角落抱有极高的热忱。同时,他在餐饮、贸易及零售业也拥有20年的工作经验。

融资目标、融资计划
Pak’ Mund Laksa计划在本次股权众筹中获得最低五十万令吉,最高一百万令吉的资金。其中40%将用以在12个月内进行本地与海外的业务拓展,20%用于12至18个月内的销售及市场推广,20%用于12个月内的工厂及设备升级,10%在12个月内进行硬件和软件系统升级,其余10%在12个月内用于增加人手。
