I am Clement Lin, the founder of Meet Mee, and I have been running F&B line for 18 years. Not only am I exposed with the process of running a F&B business, I have also gathered practical experience on building brand awareness and strategic planning.

In these 18years, I have been fully focusing on my panmee noodle business which has resulted on a successful launch of 4 different panmee brands and 1 pork noodle brand. One of the panmee brands, in just 16 months of its operation, was acquired by others and resold for a total value of RM1 million.

 

 

2019 was the year when the pandemic ruthlessly raged across the world and one of the industries that got hit the worse was F&B line. Under the dire circumstance and to cut losses, I had to painfully shut down 5 of my panmee businesses and 1 of my pork noodle shop. Despite the closing down of my businesses, I have never taken a step back. Instead, I kept searching for different opportunities and I chose to pivot my business online. By that, Meet Mee has repositioned itself as a whole new product in the noodle market.

Gave up on being a 3D Animator due to eyesight
Became a self-taught panmee noodle business owner instead

Thinking back, I have never thought of running my own business. When I was still at college, studying 3D animation, a doctor had diagnosed me with multiple sclerosis. I was shocked because I  had no bad habits and I had never even heard of such illness before. Since then, both of my eyes are unable to see to the right side, leaving “the left side” world.

The doctor told me that I wouldn’t be able to look at the computer for long hours. I was only 22 by then and I hadn’t felt more lost. Due to my illness, I was insured with a sum of money from the insurance which allowed me to start my venture in a noodle business. My life has changed since then. In 2003, I had opened up my very first panmee shop, which I continued to open several branches. At my business’ peak state, a total of 6 noodle shops were launched.

 

 

I initially thought that I could depend steadily on my panmee business but things just happened. First came the GST taxes and then the epidemic. Given that most of the noodle shops were located near colleges, the suspension of colleges led to a drastic drop of my sales. So, in order to cut loss, the shops were shut down one-by-one, and in the end only one was left.

 

 

 

Wouldn’t I be hopeless? Definitely hopeless, but I was not able to accept the fact that what I have built from my own sweat, blood, time and effort to fade away. Just as I was at my lowest state, it reminded me of how I first came to know about my illness. I decided to change because “when the mountain can’t change, the road will; but if the road can’t change, we change(Chinese quote).”

With the help of teachers to speed up the transition out of epidemic crisis 
Launched instant panmee that sold over 150,000 packs

 

I got inspired by many people who were selling homemade dishes online, so my sister, Sing Yee and I decided to sell the individual side dishes of panmee noodle. We turned the remaining noodle shop into a factory, producing canned dried chili, fried garlic, onions, fish cakes and etc under the brand name of Meet The Chili. Through the e-marketing platform, it has given us light at the end of the tunnel.

 

 

In May 2020, we set up Meet the Chili on Shopee platform. After seeking help from Astro AEC “Astro Business Talk” show, I decided to get into the food processing industry. The show was started by DJ Xiao Ma and two other business coaches, who are the retail expert, Neil Foo and financial expert, Mr Koong Lin Loong. They understood my circumstance and then proposed a solution.

 

 

 

The program team arranged for me to talk with with experienced local noodle manufacturers about the cooperation and the feasibility of launching instant packed panmee. Finally, I found the noodle factory which I am currently cooperating to develop Malaysia specialized instant panmee and its sauces. Since then, Meet Mee came on board again, replacing Meet The Chili as well as establishing its corporate route.

 

 

Meet Mee instant panmee has started to be sold since 28th of December 2020 and the chili panmee has been the top one selling instant noodle in Shopee’s noodle category brands for a continuous 5-month period. Also, our newly launched 2-month Mama clear soup panmee has jumped onto the top three list. To date, our daily Shopee sales has exceeded 12,000 packs and the combination of offline and online sales has exceeded 150,000 packs, receiving numerous praises!

Global demand of instant noodles is booming
Meet Mee is in the position to fight for a share in the market

The pandemic may have severely impacted the food industry, but it has rapidly accelerated the development of instant food products. Due to Covid-19, stockpiling and home cooking have become a new norm and that have opened up unlimited possibilities for my instant panmee noodles.

 

 

 

 

 

According to the analyst from China’s iiMedia Research, the market demand for instant food soared because of the pandemic. At the same time, a fast-paced lifestyle has further changed our eating diet which makes consumers to be more and more dependent of instant food. With that, instant food packs are expected to become the next fast growing food industry.

From what I observed, even when the epidemic is over, the market demand for instant noodles will only be increasing. It is specifically attractive when one can conveniently eats a bowl of authentic panmee which tastes similar as in the shops. So, I keep no hesitation on developing instant food product. With much proven facts, the instant packed panmee was a hit in the market and they were fast-selling the moment they’re launched.

 

The increasing popularity of Lizhou’s river snails rice noodle (Luosifen) from China acts as an excellent reference for me. The annual production and sales volume of river snails rice noodle from 2017 to 2020 have risen from RMB 3 billion to RMB 10.56 billion. It is expected that the industrial output value will reach RMB 30 billion by 2022, which proves that besides traditional instant noodles, other types of instant noodles are able to get their fair shares in the instant noodle market.

According to the data shown by the World Instant Noodle Association, in 2020, a global consumption of instant noodles is 116.6 billion, which is about 320 million instant noodles are consumed daily around the world. In Malaysia itself, between the year 2013 to 2019, Malaysians' consumption of instant noodles had reached up to 1.45 billion.

 

 

As shown by the development data above, it seems that we have entered the outbreak era of convenience food. Only by striving for perfection and continuously developing high-quality products, we will be able to overcome the epidemic, stepping outside of the traditional enterprise framework and finally, catching up with the world food market trend.

Make our national cuisine into a fast-food industry chain
Become an innovation leader in the convenience food industry

Nearly 20 years that I have spent on this F&B business, focusing on chili panmee and continuously developing different local flavors of chili sauce. Also, I have developed many other side dishes such as fried shallots, fried garlic, fried fish, fried fish cakes and so on that will bring more convenience in cooking for others.

 

 

At the same time, we are preparing to open the market for all races. The Malay market is one of our next key plans. We will strike out with a new look/brand for the Malay market, replace all ingredients with halal-qualified ingredients, and fully move towards halal production specifications.

Most importantly, Meet Mee uses high-tech air-drying technology to make the noodles and has no preservative added in order to advocate a healthy delicious food for everyone. Also, Meet Mee is committed in making this national cuisine into the instant packaged food industry and becoming the leader of innovation in the instant noodle market.

 

 

Being a new online startup brand, our performance goal for this year is RM 2.4millions, and as of this May, there is close to RM1 million in revenue. At the same time, we have not only received procurement services from Singapore, Hong Kong and UK, we have also received enquiries from Thailand, Germany, Cambodia and Taiwan, requesting us to sell the products abroad in order to relieve homesickness among the Malaysians there.

 

 

 

 

Meet Mee has arrived at its regrouping stage and to speed up the work for rebranding as well as setting off a new force in the instant food industry, I have decided to start equity crowdfunding on MyStartr’s platform. The target is to reach RM1 million where:

  • 40% of the funds will be used for brand and marketing promotion,
  • 40% for food technology improvement and new product development,
  • 20% for talent recruitment.

虽不敌疫情结束门店生意
Meet Mee 新姿态转战电子商务

 

我是林柯延Clement Lin,Meet Mee 的创始人,在本地饮食界打拼了18 年,不仅仅熟悉餐饮专卖店的运营操作,而且在品牌推广及战略规划中积累不少实战经验。

在这18 年里,我一直都专注在板面专卖店的生意,并且成功创建了4 个板面专卖店品牌以及1 个猪肉粉专卖店品牌;其中1 个板面专卖店的品牌,更在经营短短16 个月获得他人收购,以总值100 万令吉转卖了。

 

 

2019 年新冠疫情在世界各地肆虐,餐饮业是其中一个受疫情影响最大的行业之一,以致我在后期经营的5 间板面专卖店以及1 间猪肉粉专卖店也不能幸免,为了止损最后只好忍痛结业。虽然关掉了所有门店的生意,但是我并没有松懈下来,而是不断的寻找出路,选择了转战电子商务,Meet Mee的品牌以全新姿态回到面食市场!

因视线影响放弃3D 动画专长
无师自通成了板面专卖店老板

回想当初,我从来没有想过创业。当我还在学院主修3D动画的时候,却在那时候被医生诊断患上多发性硬化症。我当时是错愕的,因为没有什么不良嗜好的我,突然得了这种听也没听过的病症,而且这病导致我的两只眼睛都看不到右边,从此只剩下左边的世界。

医生告知我再也无法长时间看电脑,正当只有22岁的我觉得前路茫茫的时候,由于因病获赔保险金,我就拿着这笔钱误打误撞开始了卖面生涯,从此改变了我的人生。自2003 年开始,我从创建第一间板面店后,逐步发展开了好几间分行,在高峰时期总共开了6 间店面。

 

 

原本以为这样的「板面人生」总算给自己拥有一个稳定的生活依靠,但人算不如天算,先是消费税的冲击,然后就是新冠疫情的打击。由于所有的店面刚巧都开设在大学附近,学府因疫情停学,我的客流量直接跌入谷底,所以为了止损,不得已关了一间接一间,最后只剩一家。

 

 

 

能不绝望吗?肯定是绝望的,而且也很不甘心。看着心血慢慢消逝,这不光是血汗,还有这些年的努力及坚持,因此在最困难的时候,就像当初发现自己患病时,我选择了山不转,路转;路不转,人转。

名师协助加速转型走出疫情危机
推出袋装板面总销量破15 万包

 

因为看到网上许多人售卖homemade料理而得到启发,我和妹妹Sing Yee决定把搭配在板面上的配料单独出售。我们把留下来的1间面馆改为临时加工厂,把干辣椒、炸蒜、炸葱、炸鱼饼等,通通变成罐装,并以Meet The Chili为名,通过电商平台出售,总算在绝境中柳暗花明又一村。

 

 

2020年5月,Meet The Chili品牌在SHOPEE创设网店。在我寻求Astro AEC《企业棒帮忙》节目的协助后,也决定投入食品加工业。我当时在节目中寻求食品技术及营销方面的协助及指导,而节目发起人兼制作人DJ 小马,以及两位导师即新零售专家符策勤和财务专家孔令龙在了解我的情况后,提出了解决方案。

 

 

 

节目组曾安排我跟国内有经验的面食厂家谈合作及推出袋装板面的可行性,而最后我找到了目前合作的面厂,开发了大马专属的袋装板面和酱料零食化,进而重启Meet Mee板面品牌取代Meet The Chili,并奠定了企业路线。

 

 

Meet Mee袋装板面自2020年12月28日初战告捷至今,辣椒板面更连续5个月稳坐SHOPEE即食面排行榜第一名,就连刚推出两个月的清汤妈妈板面也一跃升上排行榜第三名。

目前创下SHOPEE【单日销量破12000包】以及线上线下【总销量突破15万包】的佳绩,并且获得无数好评!

全球方便食品爆发时代
Meet Mee有条件争取市场份额

新冠疫情虽然对堂食造成了严重伤害,但也因此促成速食正餐化的迅速成长,毕竟疫情期间人人自危,囤粮以及在家煮食已成了新常态,所以袋装板面确实为我打开了无限可能。

 

 

 

 

 

根据中国艾媒咨询(iiMedia Research)分析师指出,市场在疫情下对方便食品释放了巨大需求。与此同时,快节奏生活方式推动了饮食习惯的改变,消费者对于方便快捷的食品依赖度越来越高,方便速食有望成为食品行业新的增长引擎。

在我看来,就算疫情过后,市场对方便面的需求只会有增无减,尤其是可以轻易的在家吃到一碗与堂食同样滋味的板面,应该更有吸引力。所以,我义无反顾的朝向速食正餐化发展,而事实也证明,袋装板面获得市场的热烈反应,一开售就卖得满堂红。

 

源自中国柳州的螺蛳粉,在中国市场的不断普及也是一个很好的借镜。螺蛳粉于2017 至2020 年的年产销量由30 亿人民币上涨至105 亿6000 万人民币,预计到2022 年产业产值将达到300 亿人民币,即证明除了传统的方便面,其他种类的方便面也可以在方便食品市场争杯羹。

世界方便面协会数据也显示,2020 年全球消费约1166 亿份方便面,等于全世界每天在消费3.2 亿份方便面。在大马方面,从2013 年至2019 年,大马人在方便面的消费也都达到14.5 亿份。

 

 

以上种种的数据及发展迹象看来,我们踏入了方便食品的爆发时代,只有精益求精,不断开发高素质的产品,才能走出疫情、走出传统企业的框架,并且赶上世界食品的发展列车。

我花了将近20 年专注食品事业,主打辣椒板面以及不断研发各种本地口味的辣椒酱,同时也开发不少厨房小帮手的产品,如炸葱、炸蒜、炸江鱼仔、炸鱼饼等,让人们下厨变得更简单。
